Homemade dog food

Filed under: dog food — kirataffy @ 8:02 am

Recently my mini Snauzer had a 2 day hospital stay with Pancreatitis.  This digestive disease is painfull and can be life threatening.  So, as a result he has to be on a low fat, high fiber diet.   So, we switched his dry dog food and used the prescription I/D canned food.  I am out of the can and back to using Pedigree.  When I compare the Pedigree to the I/D canned food, there is a massive difference.   I love Pedigree, but I believe the I/D is better quality.   Anyway,  I have 4 dogs all together.  Three large breed and the one small breed.  I go through 40 lbs of dry dog food a month and I go through 60 cans of wet every month.   Yes, that adds up to a chunk of change.  LOL

Have you ever read the ingrediants to dog food?   It really isn’t very good.  It is very fattening and full of left over meat and corn.  I am thinking this can’t be healthy for my dogs.  So, the dry food will be switched over to Science Diet Lite.  It is low in fat, high in fiber and protien.  I am also seriously considering making my own canned food for them.  It will be healthier for them.  I am sure their bodies will use up all the nutrients and that will undoubtadly lead to less stool in my back yard!  I don’t know if it will be cheaper though.  It doesn’t really matter, however.

We are also making homemade dog cookies.  Nathan was given a recipe book for dog cookies and making these for our dogs and gifts will be fun!

So, I will get back to you on the success of the homemade dog food.  It will go over well with these dogs, because food is so important to them.  LOL  I am more concerned about their digestive system and that is what is prompting all this.
